Abstract:
This is a line GIS data set of detailed bathymetry located offshore Palm Beach County, Florida produced using bathymetric data from a Laser Airborne Depth Sounding (LADS) survey. This is a line GIS data set of detailed bathymetry located offshore northern Dade County, Florida produced using bathymetric data from a Laser Airborne Depth Sounding (LADS) survey. The contour features were spatially manipulated to match the contours of adjacent Broward County. The features were clipped at the 1:24000 Broward County Boundary and edge matched. ArcGIS 9.1 was used to edge match contours using the midpoint of the link. Where the gap was greater than 5 meters, smoothing was applied manually to vertices within a 30 meter radius of the link point.
Purpose:
This data was created for engineers and geotechnical personnel to produce a method for the characterization of the hard bottom and reef resources of the Dade County coastline, and to provide a unique basemap for cartographic needs.

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). Raw data was obtained using a de Havilland Dash 8-202 aircraft flying at 25,000 ft at a variable speed of about 175 knots (90 meters per second). Positional fixing occurred using a wide area differential GPS and coarse acquisition (C/A) code + carrier phase smoothed position DGPS.

LADS MkII is an airborne laser bathymetry system (lidar) which collects accurate, high-density bathymetric data using laser light pulsed from a fixed wing aircraft. Three-dimensional digital depth data is captured by measuring the time difference between returns of light reflected from the surface and from the seabed. Real time tides will be applied to all soundings to reduce them to the required datum. This is done as part of standard ground data processing procedures. Sounding position and depth accuracy is expected to be International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) Order 1.
