Vessel traffic upon both coastal and interior waterways is not confined to marked channels and specific pathways. Vessel operators, especially with small recreational craft, are usually free to choose whatever navigational route their vessel is capable of travelling. This data set attempts to describe the major documented and identifiable traffic routes throughout Florida. It is recognized that numerous uncharted waterway traffic routes identifiable only through extensive local knowledge and intensive field observations are not included in this dataset.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P STYLE="margin:0 0 11 0;"&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;This dataset does not infer the appropriate types or sizes of vessels that could potentially use a specific waterway. <statement>Identification and alignment of linear features was conducted “heads up style” with ArcGIS Pro using the suite of publicly available base maps for reference. Descriptive attributes were also derived from these reference materials as well as Google Earth Street View images and the USCG ATONs dataset accessed through the FWC GIS database. GIS datasets, digital documents, or web maps from the cities of Cape Coral, Cocoa Beach, Marco Island, Palm Coast, Punta Gorda County, as well as Charlotte County and the South Florida Water Management District were especially helpful in identifying names of their respective waterways. Where conflicts were observed, especially with place names, additional references and subject-matter experts were consulted. It is recognized that waterway names compiled into this dataset could be inaccurate or differ from original official sources.
It is recognized that not all potential nor actual waterway traffic routes are represented in this dataset. It is also recognized that the classification system used will not meet all potential user needs. Such goals were beyond the scope of this initial data compilation effort. No warranty as to the accuracy of the information portrayed nor its suitability for a particular purpose is provided.</statement>

<attrdef>A subjective classification system describing the general physical and functional characteristics of a waterway traffic route. There is a loose hierarchy from routes that can service large vessels and significant levels of traffic, down to routes that are restricted to serving small vessels and localized levels of traffic. There is also a distinction between routes that are navigationally connected to tidal waters versus routes that are navigationally isolated from tidal waters. The classification is subjective and there are no numerical thresholds to differentiate among categories. This classification system was not developed to suit a specific purpose but rather was simply used to organize the data during initial development.
Marked Channel – Large Vessel: A traffic route designated by aids to navigation. This type of traffic route accommodates large ocean-going vessels. Recreational vessels also utilize this type of traffic route.
Marked Channel – Primary: A traffic route designated by aids to navigation. This traffic route can accommodate large recreational yachts and commercial barge traffic. The level of vessel traffic can be high. This traffic route is often maintained by a government entity. The Atlantic and Gulf Intracoastal Waterways are examples.
Marked Channel – Secondary: A traffic route designated by aids to navigation. This traffic route can accommodate large recreational vessels and significant levels of vessel traffic. This traffic route is often maintained by a government entity but can be maintained by a private entity. Marked Channel – Tertiary: A traffic route designated by aids to navigation. This traffic route appears to be used less frequently and by smaller recreational vessels than a secondary marked channel. This traffic route is often maintained by a government entity but can be maintained by a private entity. Creek – River: A waterway traffic route confined by the shorelines of a natural, or semi-natural linear water body. Note that when a waterway traffic route is defined by channel markers, the waterway will be designated as a marked channel. This definition does not describe the width or depth of the creek or river. The geographic location depicted by the line does not necessarily locate the deepest water within the feature. Canal: A waterway traffic route confined by the walls of a dredged canal No further description has been assigned.
Connected Canal: A waterway traffic route confined by the walls of a dredged canal that is navigationally connected to tidal water. Note that when a waterway traffic route is defined by channel markers, the waterway will be designated as a marked channel even when contained within a canal.
Isolated Canal: A waterway traffic route confined by the walls of a dredged canal that is navigationally isolated from tidal water. The canal might or might not be connected to other canals, rivers or lakes but without a navigable connection to tidal water. Note that when a waterway traffic route is defined by channel markers, the waterway will be designated as a marked channel even when contained within a canal.
Local Terminus: A dead-end single waterway or dead-end network of waterways that support local traffic associated with private residences or boat access facilities. Vessel traffic levels and vessel sizes can vary greatly among this type of waterway. No further description is provided.

General Pathway: A well-used traffic route across open water that is not marked by aids to navigation. These routes are generally within bays, lagoons, lakes, wide rivers, or within the nearshore marine environment. Offshore Route: A traffic route across open water of the Atlantic or Gulf that is not necessarily marked by aids to navigation. However, start and end points are often in close proximity to major or minor inlets that are marked by aids to navigation. These routes might be designated on offshore navigation charts. These routes are generally far from shore. Canoe Trail: A special waterway traffic route primarily used for canoes or kayaks. The actual location of the route might meander through dense understory and thus is not accurately portrayed by these data. The canoe trails in this dataset are designated by government entities. Where a designated canoe trail follows a motorboat route, the motorboat route takes precedence, and the waterway is depicted as a motorboat route.
Airboat Trail: A special waterway traffic route used almost exclusively by airboats when water levels are deep enough. The route might meander through dense emergent and floating vegetation. The actual location of the route can vary with water levels, vegetation distribution, and other environmental conditions. Not Designated Yet: A description for this waterway segment has not yet been assigned.
