<abstract>This dataset represents a compilation of waterbody data from various sources, including the U.S. Geological Survey's National Hydrography Dataset, the U.S. Census Bureau's Tiger/Line data from 2003/2012, numerous FWRI hydrography datasets, and other state, county, and local sources as listed below.</abstract>
<purpose>To catalog a comprehensive database of named waterbodies in Florida with unique identifier codes for standardization with related databases throughout the agency.</purpose>

<procdesc>This dataset is a compilation of other waterbodies data that was started in 2011 when a shapefile was created using data from the 2010 NHD dataset, various FWC/FWRI hydrography sources, and heads up digitizing. In 2016 new features were added from numerous federal, state, and local sources (see above), and the data were edited to remove duplicate features and fix topological errors such as overlaps. Two fields were joined from the USGS Geographical Name Information System (GNIS) database (GNIS_ID, Class). A third field (Link_ID) was then created by concatenating the County_ID field with another field containing sequential numbers calculated for each county. </procdesc>

<procdesc>1412 waterbodies were added to database, most of which were lakes, swamps, and canals. Names for the new waterbodies were primarily obtained using tabular data download from Florida Atlas of Lakes and displayed using the coordinates provided in the tables. Other naming information was obtained from the USGS-GNIS database. Geometry for the waterbodies was copied and pasted from hydrography databases of the various state and local agencies listed above, as well as the FWRI. </procdesc>

<stepDesc>This dataset is a compilation of other waterbodies data that was started in 2011 when a shapefile was created using data from the 2010 NHD dataset, various FWC/FWRI hydrography sources, and heads up digitizing. In 2016 new features were added from numerous federal, state, and local sources (see above), and the data were edited to remove duplicate features and fix topological errors such as overlaps. Two fields were joined from the USGS Geographical Name Information System (GNIS) database (GNIS_ID, Class). A third field (Link_ID) was then created by concatenating the County_ID field with another field containing sequential numbers calculated for each county.</stepDesc>

Names for the new waterbodies were primarily obtained using tabular data download from Florida Atlas of Lakes and displayed using the coordinates provided in the tables. Other naming information was obtained from the USGS-GNIS database. Geometry for the waterbodies was copied and pasted from hydrography databases of the various state and local agencies listed above, as well as the FWRI.</stepDesc>
