Description: To reduce the likelihood of ship strikes of the endangered North Atlantic right whale, recommended two-way shipping lanes near major ports on the U.S. Atlantic coast were designed and first implemented in 2006. These data represent recommended lanes in the southeastern US for vessels traveling into or out of the Florida ports of Jacksonville and Fernandina Beach or at Brunswick harbor, Georgia from November to April. The recommended lanes for the port of Brunswick, Georgia were updated in November of 2012. These data reflect the updated route for Brunswick, GA.
Description: This dataset represents mandatory speed restriction zones as described in the Final Rule To Implement Speed Restrictions to Reduce the Threat of Ship Collisions With North Atlantic Right Whales (50 CFR Part 224.105). While the offshore boundaries of the mandatory speed restriction areas are fixed, the majority of the coastal boundary is represented by shoreline data. Because shorelines are highly dynamic, the dataset used to represent the shoreline, while contemporary, will likely become quickly outdated in a number of locations. In addition, GIS projection and topology functions can often change or generalize coordinates. For these reasons, the spatial features contained in this dataset are considered to be approximate representations and are NOT an OFFICIAL record for the exact regulated area boundaries. Metadata for this dataset can be found at https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/inport/item/70994. Description: This layer represents a temporally dynamic habitat model to predict wintering right whale distribution in the SEUS using a generalized additive model framework and aerial survey data from 2003/2004 through 2012/2013. The model summarizes whale sightings, survey effort corrected for probability of whale detection, and environmental data at a semimonthly resolution.See: Gowan TA, Ortega-Ortiz JG (2014) Wintering Habitat Model for the North Atlantic Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis) in the Southeastern United States.
