Water quality describes the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of water as a measure of the condition of water relevant to its suitability for a particular use. Several factors, such as nutrients, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, bacteria, algae, and contaminants, may determine suitability. In the Florida Keys, "good" water quality implies conditions that support the intended use of our waters (Fish Consumption, Recreation, Propagation, and Maintenance of a Healthy, Well-Balanced Population of Fish and Wildlife).
To identify and implement priority corrective actions within a compliance schedule to address point and nonpoint sources of pollution to maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Sanctuary. The program is also to include the restoration and maintenance of a balanced, indigenous population of corals, shellfish, fish, and wildlife, and recreational activities in and on the water.
