Canal Restoration Advisory Subcommittee

Purpose

In 2002, the nearshore waters and canals of the Florida Keys were determined by the State of Florida to be impaired due to nutrients. In response, the WQPP created a Canal Restoration Advisory Subcommittee to investigate methods to improve water quality in residential canals via a series of canal restoration demonstration projects, and to oversee the development of a Canal Management Master Plan. In September 2013, Monroe County completed a comprehensive Canal Management Master Plan (CMMP), which developed a prioritization for canal restoration and outlined feasible strategies to improve the water quality in the canals throughout the Florida Keys. A final report on the demonstration projects was completed in 2018, and the Canal Restoration Advisory Subcommittee became inactive shortly thereafter.
